Reflection/Perspectives

Why the sustainable future of social science subjects?

Many things may change. The importance and significance of the arts and humanities subjects would be relevant to any generation to come. It is through the arts and humanities that we learn a great deal about the past and are guided by its future sources of projection, where we are today. When we are questioning the relevancy of the social sciences in the 21st century. The facts and truth are that it is most relevant to any development to know about the past. Without a past, we cannot just jump to technocrats’ skills. The science and technology that we are talking about also originated from the social sciences. Scientists have spent more than decades in the research field, exploring, and doing experimental validation of what is invented also depends on the knowledge and skill of the social sciences.

If we look at most of the scientists, philosophers, scholars, and social thinkers of the 20th century, they have a polymath’s understanding of the subject matter. For instance, Aristotle was considered the father of biology and the father of political science. His concept of understanding became profound because he has a better understanding of the social environment, which involves both science and social science. Because of his profound understanding of the social sciences, sociology looked upon him as the founder of sociology in the sense of general social philosophy. For science, he had a profound influence on the science, particularly his ideas of deduction and induction, and heavily emphasised the ideas of empirical research or observation.

In my view, I found there are no ways and means to discourage artists and humanities subjects. Social scientists and social science subjects are required for any company to shape ideas of social values and skills continuously. Instead, Bhutan, a small nation-state, should emphasise and aspire to produce the highest number of leading humanities and social scientists who would be experts in the fields of culture, language, religion, and philosophy to keep our national identity alive through these fields of experts. This does not mean that I do not like educational reforms that are currently underway, since they pose a threat to the established way of thinking and doing. With the change in time and advancement in science and technology, change is indispensable without creating uncertainty in the humanities and social science subjects.
